Get ready to boot, scoot, and boogie in Dunedin! This weekend, the city will be buzzing with energy as it hosts its biggest line dancing event ever. Over 300 enthusiastic dancers from all over New Zealand and Australia will converge on the Edgar Centre, ready to hit the dance floor and show off their moves.

The Dunedin Boots and Beats Club, the driving force behind this spectacular event, has pulled out all the stops to ensure it’s a memorable occasion. They're bringing in top-tier talent to lead the festivities, including the renowned Heather Barton from Scotland, a three-time Crystal Boot award winner. Joining her are Australian dance stars Stephen Paterson and Luke Watson, along with Christchurch’s very own Laressa Frost. These experts are set to teach participants a variety of new and exciting dance steps.

Heather Barton, who has been a global line dancing instructor for 28 years, shared her excitement about coming to Dunedin. She mentioned that she never imagined she’d make it here as an instructor. It all started when local club members joined her online classes during the COVID-19 lockdown, creating an instant connection that led to this in-person event.

“Line dancing is fantastic for meeting people, getting a good workout, and boosting your mental health,” Heather said with a smile. “People always worry they have two left feet, but we can fix that—no problem!” Heather is also planning to add a unique twist to the event with some fresh dances and even a quirky Scottish fat suit to bring extra fun to the sessions.

Event organizer Lorna Williams couldn’t be more thrilled about the resurgence of line dancing. “It’s evolved so much over the years. Nowadays, we’re dancing to a wide range of music, from rock’n’roll to Irish pop, and of course, some good old country tunes,” she said. “The diversity in music has helped line dancing make a comeback.” No need to fret about special attire for the event—participants are encouraged to come as they are. The club prides itself on its inclusive nature, boasting members who range from 20 to 80 years old. This wide age range showcases that line dancing truly is for everyone, regardless of age or experience.

The Dunedin Boots and Beats Club has been a cornerstone of the local community, bringing people together through the joy of dance. Members have been practising diligently for weeks, eagerly anticipating the chance to learn from some of the best in the business. The event promises not only to be a fantastic learning experience but also a celebration of camaraderie and the love of dance.

In addition to the dance workshops, there will be plenty of opportunities for socializing and making new friends. The club has organized various social events and gatherings throughout the weekend, ensuring that attendees have a well-rounded and enjoyable experience. From casual meet-and-greets to more structured dance sessions, there’s something for everyone.

So, if you’re in Dunedin this weekend, make sure to check out the biggest line-dancing event the city has ever seen. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a complete beginner, there’s a place for you on the dance floor. Dust off your boots, bring your enthusiasm, and get ready to join in the fun!
