Rhythm and Rawhide Choreography Competition—a whirlwind of dance, creativity, and community spirit! The mission? To help support and reignite the passion for competitive dancing, inspire New Zealanders to create their own line dance choreography, and support our network of homegrown talent in the line dancing world.

The inaugural event last year was a hit! Held in Ngatea on the Hauraki Plains, the stomping ground of the Rhythmic Thunder line dancers, we had 19 out of 20 slots filled with eager participants. Dancers from Auckland, Gisborne, Waikato, and the Bay of Plenty came together, many creating their very first dances.

It was a lively line dance social where choreography competitors stepped into the spotlight every three dances, keeping the crowd engaged and entertained throughout the day.

With four seasoned judges, including head judge Joy Dawson, the former National Director of CWDI, we bring decades of dancing expertise to the table. Our rules, adapted from Bill Larson’s Australian guidelines, ensure a fair and fun competition.

Rhythm and Rawhide is all about encouraging dancers to dream big, create, and share their moves with the support of their clubs. The event is named after a beloved class run by Karen Rogers in Tauranga, which hosted the Stars Line Dance competition in Mount Maunganui for years.

Our categories cater to all levels: Beginner, Improver, Intermediate, Advanced, plus a Judges' Choice Award and an Overall Points Winner.

Everyone walks away with a badge and certificate, while the top three in each category earn medals and trophies.

Last year’s Overall Winner was the stunning “Something Like Me” choreographed by Devon Cox and Cadence Cox to Chris Kläfford’s soulful tune. - Stepsheet CopperKnob
